First Day Hike at Fort Phil Kearny

Published

on

Every January, Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site participates in the “First Day Hike” program – a twenty-plus-year-old national initiative designed to encourage not only a healthy and active lifestyle but an appreciation for the nation’s parks and historic sites

This year’s First Day Hike at the Fort will begin at 1:00 on New Year’s Day.

Walkers will meet at the Fort Phil Kearny Interpretive Center, and take an easy 1-mile hike around the upper stockade area of the fort, while staff members talk about the Fort’s history.

The event is free and open to the public. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed. Refreshments will be provided after the tour in the Interpretive Center, and the bookstore will be open.

The weather on New Year’s Day can be very, very cold, so participants are urged to wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing. The event takes place outdoors, so this event is weather dependent.
