Two of the most scenic highways in northwest Wyoming are about to open for the summer traveling season.

US Highway 212 over the Beartooth Pass and the Dunraven Pass inside Yellowstone National Park, are scheduled to open on Friday, May 23rd.

The openings are dependent on the weather, and it’s possible that a weather system could force a short-term re-closure of the roads, until snow plow crews determine they are safe to travel on again.

The Beartooth Pass Highway is normally closed between 9.4 miles east of the intersection of US Highway 212 and Wyoming State Highway 296, to about 12 miles southwest of Red Lodge, Montana.

A few miles south of the Wyoming-Montana border, the highway gets up to almost 11,000 feet above sea level.

Beartooth Highway normally closes for the winter season in mid October, because too much snow combined with too little traffic, makes snow plowing efforts on the highway impractical.

Dunraven Pass connects Canyon Village to the Tower Fall area in Yellowstone National Park and normally closes in late October or early November, along with most of the other roads inside the Park.

Looking forward to visiting the area and traveling on both passes in late June!
