Raptor nesting activity in Tensleep Canyon is prompting a voluntary closure of some climbing routes. The nest sites will be monitored throughout the summer and the affected areas are closed effective immediately through August 15. The closure encompasses routes in Valhalla and Moby Dick climbing areas. Signs are being placed in the canyon to help people determine where they should or shouldn’t climb. Some climbing routes have names that may be offensive to some people, the Bighorn National Forest is not involved in naming the routes. Route developers and first ascensionists name rock climbing routes.

Disturbing nests during this critical time could lead to the death of the young and a reduction in overall population numbers. According to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, land
management agencies are required to prevent a ‘take’ of specific bird species. Among other
actions, law states a take includes disturbing the birds while they are nesting. If you have questions, please contact Bonnie Allison, south zone wildlife biologist, at 307-684-
7806 or bonnie.allison@usda.gov.
