According to online sources, the Harry Potter series of children’s fantasy books by J.K. Rowling sold more than 500 million copies worldwide. The phenomenon motivated an entire generation of children to return to the written word for entertainment. It helped children learn to read and has inspired an entire franchise which includes movies, video games, toys and more.

During an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Sheridan County Public Library System Youth Services Manager Zola Shockley said the staff at the library is always on the lookout for the next big hit in children’s books, but feels that such a sensation is rare and may not happen again for decades, if at all. And that’s a good thing.

Rowling’s financial success and creative accomplishments are second to none in the literary world. But her greatest accomplishment is motivating children to read.

In today’s world, the literary options for children are greater than ever before and the Sheridan County Library System works to encourage reading through the summer vacation season with the Summer Reading program.

This year the Summer Reading program will begin on June 17, and continue until the end of the month of July. According to Shockley, special guest Smokey the Bear will be in attendance on opening day to celebrate his 80th birthday with the kids.
