New unemployment numbers from the Wyoming State Department of Workforce Services show that unemployment rates dropped state-wide from December 2023 to January 2024, however Sheridan and Johnson Counties bucked the trend.
The statewide seasonally adjusted rate for January 2024 is at 2.8%.
That’s down from 2.9% in December of 2023 , and down from January of 2023, when it was at 3.3%.
The U.S. seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January 2024 was at 3.7%, which is unchanged from the previous month, but up from 3.4% in January 2023.
Sheridan County checked in at 3.5% in January 2024, which is up from 2.4% in the previous month, but down from 4.1% in January 2023.
Johnson County was at 4.0% last month, and that’s up from 2.6% in December 2023, and up from 3.9% in January 2023.
The Department of Workforce Services says the reason for the unemployment rate increase was due to seasonal job losses seen in many sectors around this time of year, including construction, retail trade, government, professional & business services, and transportation, warehousing, & utilities.
Teton County had the lowest unemployment rate in Wyoming in January 2024 at 2.2%, while Big Horn County had the highest rate at 4.8%.
Nonfarm employment in the Cowboy State increased by 3,900 jobs from January 2023 to January 2024.
