The Johnson County Historical Society will present “Bones and Bullets,” a history presentation November 13 at the Johnson County Library.

According to the flier provided by the historical society, the discussion will feature Cody Newton, an archaeologist with over 20 years working in the region in both academia and cultural resource management.

He holds a Ph.D. In Anthropology from University of Colorado-Boulder.

He will talk about an 1880’s US Cavalry training camp in the western Powder River Basin, about seven miles south-southwest of Fort Phil McKinney near Buffalo.

Fired military cartridges and other metal artifacts have been recovered during a metal detecting survey of the area, and excavations within the site have found butchered bone from a variety of domesticated and wild animals.

The presentation will discuss the findings and what they show concerning the state of US Cavalry soldiers on exercise during the period.

The presentation is scheduled for Monday, November 13 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Johnson County Library’s Twing Room.

It is free to attend and open to the public.
