Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Lt. Devereaux Johnson and School Resource Officer Deputy Boot Hill made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to speak on school safety and emphasize the importance of Wyoming State Statute 31-5-929.
Johnson went on to remind the public that the citation of passing a stopped school bus carries a $435.00 fine. The Stop-Arm on public school buses is equipped with a camera. And local law enforcement is alerted to every incident of a bus being passed while stopped.
Johnson also reminded the public should that camera not be able to identify the driver, then the name on the registration of that vehicle will cited.
Deputy Hill reminded the public that distracted driving causes many accidents every year. Most distracted accidents are caused by drivers using a cellular phone. Hill suggests putting the phone away from view while operating a vehicle.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, school buses are the most regulated vehicles on the road; they’re designed to be safer than passenger vehicles in preventing crashes and injuries; and in every state, stop-arm laws protect children from other motorists. Statistics show that children are most at risk when loading and unloading school buses.
