First People’s Powwow Shares Crow Culture

Dancers and drummers filled the lawn at the Sheridan Inn on Friday, July 14 for the Annual First People’s Powwow.

The Powwow started by giving respect to mother earth. Leonard Bends of the Medicine Rock Chief of the Crow tribe, talked about the powwow.

He added this about how long they had been doing the Powwow here.

He was pleased with the large crowd, and said this about Sheridan and the parade.

There were some booths set up on the lawn as well. Collena Brown and her two sons, James and Anthony, who had the booth there, with handcrafted jewelry, and Collena said they also give presentations to schools or anywhere that people want to learn about their culture.

As well as the dances and clothing, the presentation also includes much of the history of the Crow people.

Many dancers participated in the dancing at the Powwow. There was the smudging ceremony, and the prayers in Crow language.
