During the Sheridan County Republican Party Central Committee Meeting last Saturday, the committee voted to censure State Representative Cyrus Western (R-HD51).

According to the Resolution, Western “falsely swore an oath of office in January of 2023 declaring that he was not under legal investigation, but has been under investigation by the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office since September of 2022 for illegal mailings libeling and disparaging fellow County Republicans; he illegally initiated and operated an unregistered Political Action Committee (PAC) called WINO (Wyoming in Name Only) and fraudulently failed to report financial statements as required by Wyoming law”; among others.

Tod Windsor, State Committeeman with the Sheridan County Republican Party, explains who decided to bring the censure against Western.

Windsor talks about why they felt the need to censure Western.

Windsor explains what they hope to accomplish with the censure.

Windsor said his frustration is the state hasn’t prosecuted or pursued an election code violation in years, because they usually aren’t referred to the county attorneys for prosecution.

He said the filing of the original election code violation was not due to a vendetta against Western.

He said if we’re going to have these rules, we should play by them and punish the ones that don’t play them. Someone should enforce the election code or we should stop using them altogether.

When contacted for a comment, Representative Western said, “There’s more to this story than what’s been reported, but at the advice from my legal counsel, I’m unable to provide further comment. My conservative voting record speaks for itself. From defending the unborn, to protecting our 2nd Amendment, I’ve done what I told folks I would do when I got elected. I ran on a pro-job, pro-economy platform and my record demonstrates this. I’ve worked to secure funding for our community colleges so they can further offer CTE programs and help recruit companies to Sheridan that create blue collar jobs that we need. Just this pas(t) session, I secured over $2m for Dayton to build a new pool because the community wants it. I think they approve of efforts like this.”

We don’t have control over where we are born. Just like race, gender and ethnicity, birth location is an immutable fact. That’s why this case is so troubling. He apparently set up a PAC and funded a mailer that attacked his fellow Republicans on the basis of where they were born. That’s no different than attacking them for being female or white. Nativism is a form of bigotry and should not be tolerated in the Equality State. We judge candidates on their Ideas, not place of Origin.
