During an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Sheridan Police Department Captain Tom Ringley and Lieutenant James Hill reported that the prevalence of reports of intimate partner violence (IPV) within the City of Sheridan has remained steady over the past few years.

Ringley informed listeners that (IPV) is a more specific definition of the crime under the umbrella of domestic violence.

According to Ringley, in 2017 – the first year the SPD had these specific numbers counted – SPD responded to 172 reported incidents. Last year, in 2022, SPD responded to 100  incidents. In 2021, SPD officers responded to 90 incidents.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in four women and one in nine men experience severe intimate partner physical violence sometime in their life.

Hill explained that based on statistics, IPV has likely touched everyone in some form or another at some point in their life.

The Department of Justice states that IPV accounts for about 15% of the total violent crime in the United States. According to Capt. Ringley, homicide is the leading cause of death for pregnant women in the U.S.

Sheridan Media will have more stories concerning intimate partner violence and the SPD in future stories.
