The National Weather Service in Billings is forecasting an arctic cold weather outbreak in Sheridan County beginning Dec. 20, through Dec. 24.
The weather service reports temperatures and wind chills will be dangerous and a period of accumulating snow Tuesday into Wednesday.
Lows Wednesday night are expected to reach -37 degrees in the Sheridan area with the windchill expected to reach below -50 degrees.
Residents should ensure that measures are taken to care for pets during this period of extreme temperatures. Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter Dog Lead Emi Whiting gave Sheridan Media a few tips for ensuring our furry family members are cozy while the wind gusts.
According to Whiting, during severe cold weather temperatures, it’s a good idea to bring outside dogs onto a porch or a mud room until the temperatures return to tolerable levels. In situations where that isn’t possible, provide a shelter and insulate that with straw not blankets or towels.
Whiting said heated bowls that ensure a water source for your pet are available but she warns that some pets (including some cats) like to chew power cords putting themselves at risk of shock or killing power to the unit, causing their water to freeze.
Whiting also suggests using paw-boots or other means to protect your pet’s paws while they are outside walking in the freezing temperatures.
With proper preparation both you and your pet will be able to weather the freezing temperatures.
