JCSD1 Board Approves Policy Revisions
The Board of Trustees for Johnson County School District #1 voted to accept revisions to some of their existing policies during their recent meeting.
The policy revisions are essentially cleaning up , updating, and omitting verbage in the existing policies, not changing them, according to discussions at the meeting.
The policies concerned school entry age, professional staff compensation plans, academic freedom, and teaching controversial and sensitive issues, Policy IMB, which drew the biggest discussion by the board.
Board member Randy Brown was concerned about keeping the policy, saying it could be used to justify teaching controversial subjects in the future.
The remainder of the board believed that the revisions did not protect the teaching of the subjects, and that it empowered parents and the district should a situation arise.
Superintendent Charles Auzqui said that currently, controversial subjects such as critical race theory are not taught in Wyoming schools and that the JCSD will only teach subjects that are part of the curriculum approved and required by the state.
After more discussions, the board voted to approve the policy revisions, with Brown voting against Policy IMB.
