A new scam has been reported to the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Devereaux Johnson informed listeners they may receive a call from an individual informing them they have been hacked through an app store and show a fraudulent charge on their account. This is a scam.
But the call is a scam being used to get secure information, and there is no fraudulent charge, Johnson said.
Johnson reminded listeners that a legitimate company will not object if told that verification of their identity is needed. Hang-up and notify your bank.
A fraudulent charge will show on banking information. Johnson suggests residents hang-up and call their bank. Should a charge be on their account, banks have departments to help customers get to the bottom of such charges. Professionals do not randomly call the public asking for secure information.
If you feel that you have been a victim of scammers or would like to verify if the caller is legitimate or not, call the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office at (307) 672-3455.
