Workers could get started soon on the first of several tasks to clean-up the old Acme Power Plant facility.

Recently the Sheridan County Conservation District awarded a $129-thousand contract, to WLM Excavation of Sheridan County, to clean up and remove an estimated 560 cubic yards of debris outside of the power plant buildings.

Old tires, batteries, a conveyor bridge, and the old transformer station are some of the items within the debris.

Once that’s been hauled away, the next step would be to go into the building and remove the asbestos, and then decontaminate the soil outside of the building.

District Manager Carrie Rogaczewski explains why the soil step is last.

“Don’t want to be cleaning up the soils and then bringing things from the building out into the soils again, so that’s where that’s sequenced that way. Debris, then asbestos and the other things that we can get at in the building with the current funding and then the soils.”

Rogaczewski says once workers complete some certification work, then they can get started on the debris removal, which could happen by the end of this month and take about 1 month to complete.

Money for the work is being provided by a grant from the EPA.
