Sheridan County HS Track and Field: The Gary Benson Border War Track and Field meet took place yesterday as Sheridan welcomed both Gillette teams, both Casper teams, Cody, and Billings Senior.
Big Horn also sent a couple of boys participants.
One of those was senior Gavin Stafford who ran the 100 meter dash in 10.53 seconds, and that is currently the fastest time in the state this year for that event.
State records can only be set and broken at the state meet, which is one month away, and if yesterday’s time was at the state meet, it would be a new 2A State record, and would miss the overall state record by 3-one-hundreths of a second.
This is only his second year competing in track and field and says it took some persuasion to join the team.
Sheridan has a couple of state leaders on their team.
Aiden O’Leary is currently tops in the state in the boys 110 meter hurdles, Alex Haswell is #1 in the discus, and the Broncs’ 4 by 400 meter relay team rules the roost, halfway through the season.
For the girls Lilly Charest of Sheridan is currently the best pole vaulter in the state and the Lady Broncs’ 4 by 200 meter relay team is the team to beat for now.
One of the girls in contention is sophomore Ruby Jacobs who won yesterday’s 100 meter hurdles race and was 2nd in that event back on Saturday in Billings.
She’s this year’s 4A indoor state champ in the 55 meter hurdles and says there’s more differences between indoor and outdoor track than one might realize.
Also at yesterdays’ track meet, freshmen Mesa Hanft won both the girls long jump and triple jump events.
