Sheridan HS Boys Swimming: The first state culminating event of the Wyoming high school sports winter season starts today as the Sheridan Broncs boys swimming and diving team competes at the 4A State Meet in Laramie.
Action starts today at 2pm and the finals start at 10am tomorrow.
The host team, Laramie, is attempting to 7-peat as state champs.
Last year, Sheridan placed 3rd at the state meet, which marked their best finish since 1986.
Sheridan County HS Basketball: All Sheridan County teams are scheduled to be on the court tomorrow and Saturday.
Sheridan will host Campbell County beginning with the girls game at 5:30pm.
On Saturday, the Broncs and Lady Broncs play at Thunder Basin beginning at 3:30pm.
Tongue River will play their home finale tomorrow against Sundance at 3pm, and visit Moorcroft on Saturday starting at 1:30pm.
Big Horn plays at Wright tomorrow starting at 5:30pm and will play their home finale Saturday vs. Greybull starting at 1:30pm.
Arvada-Clearmont is home both tomorrow and Saturday against Kaycee and Midwest respectively.
Friday’s and Saturday’s games start with the girls at 3pm.
Sheridan County HS Wrestling: The Sheridan and Tongue River boys are preparing for the upcoming regional tournaments.
Sheridan will be at the 4A East Regional Tournament at Campbell County on Saturday, while Tongue River will host the 2A East Regional Tournament that same day.
For the girls, both Sheridan and TR will compete at the East Regional Tournament at Torrington.
This is just the 2nd year for girls varsity wrestling in the state, and during this week last year, there was no regional or state qualifying event, because there were fewer competitors then compared to now.
Sheridan Girls Coach Marcie Lane says the Lady Broncs welcome the change and the extra challenge.
The state meet is next week in Casper.
Sheridan HS Nordic Ski: Sheridan will compete tomorrow and Saturday at a make-up meet in Cody.
For most of practice this season, there hasn’t been much snow on the ground to practice on, so the Broncs and Lady Broncs at times have had to use rock skis to practice on, instead of the regular ones, which can be easier to damage and break when snow conditions are not good.
This is the second year Sheridan has had a varsity nordic ski program and coach Falk Alicke says the experience is starting to show within the team and it has produced some satisfying results.
Like wrestling, the Nordic Ski State is also next weekend in Casper.
Sheridan HS Indoor Track and Field: Competition starts today and continues through Saturday at the Simplot Games on the campus of Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho.
Sheridan and Big Horn are scheduled to compete at that meet.
University of Wyoming Basketball: The Wyoming Cowboys were unable to hang onto a 10-point first half lead last night, and lost at home vs. 1st place Utah State, 84-76.
Second half shooting percentage and bench scoring made the difference in the game.
Both teams shot 50% or better in the first half, but in the 2nd half, the Aggies shot 60%, and the Pokes only 33%.
Utah State’s bench also outscored the brown and gold’s bench by a score of 26-10.
Brendan Wenzel led the Cowboys with 26 points.
Sam Griffin added in 18 and Mason Walters contributed with 16.
Wyoming is now 12-12 on the season and have a 5-6 record in conference play.
Their next game is this coming Saturday at San Jose State.
The Wyoming Cowgirls will also be on the court Saturday, as they play part 2 of the Border at Colorado State.
Denver Nuggets Basketball: The Denver Nuggets lost at home last night against Sacramento 102-98.
Denver has the next 7 days off, because this weekend is the All-Star break.
The Nuggets will be back in action 1 week from today at home vs. Washington.
Sheridan Hawks Hockey: The Sheridan Hawks play 2 at Gillette this weekend, as the team continues its 7-game road trip.
Including this weekend, the Hawks have 6 games remaining on their schedule and are 3 points behind in the chase for the final playoff spot.
