Beginning in March of 2025, the Lady Broncs will play ball at the varsity level.

Earlier this week, the Board for Sheridan County School District #2, unanimously voted in favor of setting up a varsity softball program.

It is estimated that it will cost the district more than $77-thousand to start up the program, and potential players, coaches and supporters are being asked to help fundraise about $35-thousand of that cost.

The District has been in talks with the Sheridan Recreation District about using the fields on 6th Street for practices and games, however the facilities would not meet the sufficient needs to host the state tournament.

There is also the possibility of the softball facilities at Sheridan College as well.

Skylee Nelson who is a current freshman at Sheridan High School, says she played softball at the rec league level this past season, but that’s it for now because she has aged out, and because of other circumstances beyond her control, she could not play for the Wyoming Mystix traveling team.

She adds once the team gets going in her junior year, she wants to get back into the swing of things and go up against some much tougher competition.

“I learned so much, I grew and I met a lot of people that I didn’t talk to before. I hope to see more people to go against, because in rec we usually only did our team, because we didn’t have that many people to go against. It would be nice to see more people that are interested just to play against and maybe more competition, something more challenging.”

Sheridan High School Activities Director Kasey Garnhart says the timing of this move came at a good time, because the first major step for the team will take place in less than 1 month.

“I’ll go into state scheduling in November and the first thing is putting together what our schedule will look like at the WHSAA level. We’ll be looking at conferencing with the addition of a few new programs around the state, so that will be the first step, get a schedule put together and then get to work on all those other pieces, such as facilities, equipment and those type of things. Eventually getting some coaches hired and getting ready to try to put together the best product that we can. We understand there’s bumps and bruises that come with the start of a program.”

The Wyoming High School Activities Association (WHSAA) made softball an official varsity sanctioned sport in 2021.

There are 13 varsity teams that will play next year, and so far this month, Sheridan, along with Jackson and Torrington have announced their intentions to join in the spring season of 2025, pending approval from the WHSAA.
