Graveside services for John Holland, a 99-year-old Sheridan resident who passed away on February 23rd at the Sheridan VA Hospital in Sheridan, Wyoming, will be held later this summer in Willow Grove Cemetery with a double interment with his partner Doris M. Carver who passed away in 2010. Online condolences may be made at www.harnessfuneralhome.com

John Frederick Holland was born on October 4, 1922, in Durham, North Carolina. He was married to Betty Lou Holland until her death in 1973. They were married at Walter Reed Hospital in 1946.

John joined the U.S. Army in December of 1942 and served in Normandy during WWII. He served in the
Quarter Masters until the time of his discharge in March of 1947. Following the war, John held many different jobs including as a coal miner in Pennsylvania, a car salesman in North Carolina, and was a licensed barber in many locations. He was employed at Homesote Company in Trenton, New Jersey from 1954 until his retirement in 1987.

John met Doris in the 1970s and in 1984 John and Doris moved to Buffalo, Wyoming. They subsequently moved to Sheridan around 2003. Doris passed away in November of 2010 and John continued to live in Sheridan until his death.

John was an avid fisherman and loved catching his dinner from the many lakes, streams, and reservoirs in the Buffalo/Sheridan area. He may have lived as long as he did due to his diet of mainly fish for the last 25 years of his life.

John was humorous and outgoing, making friends with almost anyone he met. He will be missed by his family and the many friends and acquaintances he acquired over the years.

Special thanks go to the many friends who helped him manage his life as he aged. His neighbors brought him into their homes and took him food from their own celebrations. The Veterans Administration came to his home as needed and provided him with emotional support, as well as medical services. His neighbors took over responsibilities that his far-away family could not.

In visiting John over the past few years his family understands why he moved to Sheridan/Buffalo, and certainly why he stayed in such a wonderful community. Sheridan and Wyoming should be proud to have enabled such a fine veteran as John to live the way he chose, in such a beautiful area with such a wonderful community. John is survived by one daughter Linda Radway and her husband Timothy of Kutztown, Pennsylvania, five grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. He is predeceased by his parents, his wife Betty Lou, his partner Doris Carver, one son John C. Holland, and 8 siblings.
