Pat BlairSheridan police have received two complaints of a person impersonating a police officer during traffic stops.
Police Lt. Travis Koltiska said the police department wants to make the public aware of this situation for their safety, and he assures the community that the reports are being investigated completely. Koltiska said initial reports indicate a male subject stopped two individuals in the city limits and identified himself as a police officer. The first incident occurred on Dec. 30 and the second on Jan. 4. Koltiska said it’s possible that other incidents have occurred but haven’t been reported.
He said the two victims who reported the stops described the suspect as a white male, possibly with blond hair and a mustache, driving an unmarked white Dodge Charger equipped with red and blue lights.
Koltiska said the Sheridan Police Department only conducts traffic stops for routine traffic violations in clearly marked Sheridan Police Department patrol vehicles. He said any traffic stop conducted by an unmarked Sheridan Police Department vehicle is only done to stop extremely dangerous conduct.
Koltiska said if anyone suspects they are being stopped by an individual impersonating an officer, they should lock their doors and call 911 immediately. He said certified law enforcement officers will be notified and sent to the scene immediately if they 911 dispatcher can’t verify the traffic stop.
Koltiska said anyone with additional information about these or other incidents should call the police department as soon as possible at 672-2413.
