The Crater Ridge Fire 30 miles east-northeast of Lovell burning on the Bighorn National Forest remains a full suppression fire and is at 0% containment. According to the Rocky Mountain Area Type 2 Incident Management Team, the fire has burned approximately 641 acres and there are over 270 personnel battling the blaze, including four crews; six engines; six heavy equipment; one water tender; two type 1 helicopters; two type 3 helicopters and one air attack available in Cody.

Water bucket drops from air operations continue to be effective at delaying the spread of the fire, keeping it north of Cub Creek. Holding the fire is critical as firefighters work to construct containment lines. Strategically established indirect containment lines have been created and are being improved in anticipation of increased fire activity.

The Bighorn National Forest has implemented an area closure in the northeastern portion of the Medicine Wheel Ranger District. Roads and trails are closed to public entry. A temporary flight restriction is in effect for the fire area. Stage 1 fire restrictions remain in effect for Sheridan County and the Bighorn National Forest. The Crater Ridge Fire began on July 17, and lightning is the suspected cause.
