In 2024 on National Wreaths Across America Day, more than three million wreaths were laid at the gravesites of veterans at more than 4,000 locations to honor those who risked their lives to defend the freedom of this nation.

If you wish to honor a veteran in your life, wreaths can be purchased by residents for $17, by clicking here. The deadline to sponsor a wreath is Nov. 26.

This year, Wreaths Across America will once again honor and teach lessons on sacrifice and remembrance at more than 4,000 participating locations in all 50 states, at sea and abroad for the brave men and women who served this country in the armed services.

Bev Leichtnam and Michelle Parker from Wreaths Across America made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to talk about the event and invite the Sheridan community to take part.

The local Wreaths Across America effort has been provided by the Republican Women of Sheridan County for the last five years. According to Leichtnam, there are currently 2,200 veterans buried in Sheridan’s municipal cemetery. The local Wreaths Across America places approximately 200 wreaths on veterans’ graves. The graves are selected by dividing the cemetery into sections and each year a section is honored.

Parker said this year, National Wreaths Across America Day will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Organizers are asking residents to meet at the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery office parking area prior to 10 a.m.

As each wreath is laid, time is spent saying the name of the veteran and reflecting on who this brave individual was in life and how their sacrifice has provided the freedoms we all live every day.

Leichtnam asked the community to reflect on the sacrifice made by every veteran who has served in uniform.
