Shelter prepared, already housing some animals

Sheridan County Administrative Director Cameron Duff Emergency Management Coordinator Jesse Ludikhuize made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to discuss the evacuation preparations being taken by the County.

Sheridan County Emergency Management began organizing the evacuation center at the Sheridan County Fairgrounds located at 1753 Victoria St., Sheridan, earlier this week to be prepared for the worst case scenario. 

Rocky Mountain Area Complex Incident Management Team 3 under Incident Commander Casey Cheesbrough took command of the fire Tuesday evening. 

Local assets worked to establish fire lines as the fire spread. Ludikhuize said the wind has played a major factor, allowing the fire to move quickly and jump lines.

Ludikhuize said the evacuation center is prepared to take displaced residents should an evacuation notice be issued.

Space for campers and trailers with electrical hook-ups has been made available. Staff only ask that residents check in upon arrival. Household pets are welcome at the center but must be housed in a separate heated facility with plenty of availability. 

Duff said the center is already being utilized as a location for stock animals. But many residents have reached out willing to help their neighbors with space for herds.
