He got his first paying job delivering newspapers before he was 10 years old and has been working in some capacity ever since. Now, approaching his 65th year, Hub on Smith Director of Transportation Steve Ainslie will be retiring.

Ainslie has been working with the Hub on Smith for more than 10 years. In that time, the Hub on Smith has grown not only in size but also in the amount of services offered to the senior community of Sheridan.

One service that has grown under the direct watch of Ainslie, is Goose Creek Transit; a mass transit and door-to-destination system that provides approximately 2500 rides a month to Sheridan’s population. Although the service has existed since the 70s, the fixed route program was extended, the fleet of buses were expanded and improved upon and bus stops were emplaced in no small part due to the work and dedication of Ainslie and his team of dedicated employees and volunteers.

Ainslie told listeners of Public Pulse that the bus stops alone took three years of work to make a reality.

For the last two months, Transportation Manager David French has been training with Ainslie to take the reins of the Hub’s transportation department and lead it into the future.

French has a background in logistics, a perfect fit for transportation system manager and director. He said in his short time with the Hub on Smith, he has witnessed a level of dedication and selfless service from the Hub’s team and volunteers that has humbled him.

Ainslie said he will be on the back of his motorcycle for the next few months, hoping to put about 10,000 miles on it in the near future. But the Hub and service is something that works its way into one’s blood and he said he may return to drive now and then as a volunteer.
