cvannoyFirst items on the agenda at the Monday, Oct. 2, SCSD#2 Board were recognitions. Shaw Stevens, transportation director, talked about the transportation department at SCSD#2
Scott Cleland, SHS Principal, recognized the National Merit Semifinalists, Gabi Wright and Landis Zebrowski
Trustee Ed Fessler commended the students on their achievements.
Joe Quinn talked about abut SHS Girls Golf State Championship team, saying that in the regular season the girls team won two out of the four tournaments they played in, and in one tournament they had four girls in the top ten. “This is unheard of,” he said. Three girls were all-conference, and four girls took all-state. While doing this competition and golf, they kept a team GPA for 3.9. He added that, in his opinion, there isn’t another girls’ team in the state more deserving of all these conference awards.
Several board members congratulated the girls on their accomplishments.
In his superintendent’s report, Superintendent Scott Stults explained briefly how the state funds the schools, and how property taxes figure into the funding model.
Stults also displayed a blanket that the students are selling for a fundraiser.
Trustee Michael Lansing asked that the agenda be amended to allow for audience comments to be heard before old business, as one item for discussion was the possibility of introducing softball as a school sport, and seven community members talked about the benefits of the softball team and why they felt it should be included as a sport at SCSD#2.
One community member who spoke for the softball program was Caitlin Brown, a sophomore at Sheridan High School.
Stults gave an update on the softball issue from the school’s perspective, citing the cost of the program and that fact that very few girls turned in the survey about the possible sports program. The board will hold a special meeting later in October to discuss the possibility.
Troy Decker gave a facilities update, saying he was showing slides of some of the smaller projects that they have been working on. He showed the new lighting in the cafeteria/commons room at SHS, and the work being done on the Fifth Street Property.
The secondary school principals each talked to the board about their improvement plans for the 2023-2024 school year.
Stults also mentioned a change in the board meeting schedule, changing the Legislative Round-table to Nov. 28 due to conflicts with the former date.
Next meeting will be held on Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. at the Central Office.
