cvannoySCSD#1 May board meeting was held on May 9 in Big Horn. CSVA administrator Fred Hollingshead gave a video presentation to the board about the Cowboy State Virtual Academy, and several parents and students joined him via zoom to talk about the education their children received through the academy.
Hollingshead also noted that he had reworded the SCSD#1 Mission Statement, which is “Individual Success Through Education” and he added the word, Virtual to the statement. “Individual Success Through Virtual Education.”
Cindy Hagen, librarian at Big Horn School, and Jennifer Heermann of the Sheridan Food Group, talked about the Food Pantry in Big Horn School, how it is helping students. Hagen mentioned that the food pantry at Big Horn High School is now in the library, and she said there were a couple of reasons for this move. One, the library is monitored all the time, and two, it helped to remove the stigma that some students feel when using the food pantry. Hagen thanked the Big Horn Booster Club for money to purchase items such as plastic cups and tableware.
“Our mission is to make sure no kid goes hungry,” Hagen said.
She added that many of the students in the career and independent living program are helping at the Food Pantry and some of the skills they are learning.
Big Horn Art teacher Ty George presented a slide show about the Wyoming High School State Art Symposium and how many awards the students from SCSD#1 achieved at the show.
Two blue ribbon winners were spotlighted, Cierra Zugel, who was awarded a Sheridan College Scholarship and Morgan Kepley who won the Best of the Best of the Show.
Al Sparkman, principal at Big Horn High School, mentioned that one of the students who won an award at the show had escaped the war in Ukraine.
There was one visitor John Bridges, who talked to the board about parental rights policy and a petition that was presented to the board on that issue.
The two student representatives, Lily Krumm from TRHS and Hanna Zent from Big Horn gave reports to the board, and Board Chairman Clint Krumm presented each of them with a certificate of appreciation for their attendance at board meetings through the year and their reports to the board. He urged them to hang the framed certificates on their dorm wall when they go off to college.
Krumm said this about the student representatives
In his superintendent’s report, Superintendent Pete Kilbride talked about the work the district is doing to incorporate a girls’ softball team as a sport.
He stated that he is planning to meet with Superintendent Stults about SCSD#2’s about possible plans for some students there joining the team, and how they might work together to bring it about.
The board adjourned into executive session to discuss the petition presented on parental rights.
