According to Sheridan County YMCA Executive Director Liz Cassiday, the Nation is experiencing a shortage of lifeguards.

Unfortunately, the Sheridan County YMCA is also experiencing a lack of applications for lifeguard positions. According to Cassiday, the Y needs additional guards (1-3) for nearly every shift Monday-Sunday. The Y is especially in need of night and weekend guards when the Aquatics Center has many community members bring their family’s to open swim periods.

Currently, the Y has only one to two lifeguards working, including the Y’s aquatics director. Meaning the Aquatics Center is forced to close if someone calls in with an illness.

According to Cassiday, a lifeguard position is a great job for retired adults due to its flexible schedule and could be part time or full time. Cassiday said the Y makes every effort to remain a flexible employer and appreciates that community members step up to help with the community resource.

If needed, training will also be part of the duties, so no previous experience is necessary.

When asked what may happen should the Y not be able to fill the positions, Cassiday said like pools are doing across the United States, the Y will be forced to reduce hours and occupancy.

“Insurance and best practices require a certain ratio of guards to patrons and we will be forced to limit services if we do not have the guards needed,” she said.
