Federal, state, and local firefighters are responding to the Fish Wildfire near Sundance. The fire was reported at approximately 11:30 a.m. July 31.

According to the Forest Service, the fire is burning on the Bearlodge Ranger District, Black Hills National Forest. As of 7 p.m. July 31, the fire was estimated to be at 500 acres. This fire is burning in steep, rugged terrain on Iron Mountain, approximately 7 miles south of Sundance, and east of Wyoming Highway 585.

Resources from Crook County, U.S. Forest Service and State of Wyoming Division of Forestry are actively engaged in suppression efforts. Air attack resources including a Type 1 (heavy) helicopter and air tankers are also being used.

Evacuations are occurring from South of Canyon Springs Road to the south end of the fire and east of Wyoming Highway 585.

An area closure is in place that is south of Clark Road to Reynolds Road, south to Moskee and west to Wyoming Highway 585. For public and firefighter safety, the public is asked to stay away from the area until it is safe to return.

The Wyoming Type 3 Team has been ordered to manage the fire. The team is expected to arrive tomorrow.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the Forest Service.

Your web site on the fish fire update is for 6 hr ago. Today is Aug 2nd and you are reporting July 31st, do the math or look at the calendar. It would be helpful to give the local people a very current update. We live in Beulah not far from the fire. Our current visibility is less than a quarter mile. The tv news out of Rapid City don’t have a clue. They are reporting the current size of the fire is 527 acres and zero containment. That’s what is was noon Sunday, so if that’s what it is today three days later then it’s not burning anymore. It’s funny we can hear the air tanker flying over our house now, so there must be a fire somewhere. The people would be better served with a real current status report on the fire and the air quality for senior citizens.

Easy Francis….there are much better resources for real-time updates than a media outlet. Do a google search for WY fire map…it will tell you exactly when the presented information is updated. As far as air quality for senior citizens….is telling you what it is (good, bad, really bad) really necessary? This might be a look out the window or use your nose thing.
