SPD: priorities are to ensure safety for everyone during Rodeo Week

The Sheridan Police Department will be getting some assistance from Gillette this Rodeo Week to aid officers with the influx of visitors. 

A common practice among sheriff’s offices and police departments in Wyoming, the sharing of manpower among the law enforcement agencies allows for better coverage and security during large events. This year’s WYO Rodeo will not feature a street dance as in years prior, events are spread throughout the City of Sheridan. 

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Chief of the Sheridan Police Department Travis Koltiska told listeners it will look a little different this year. 

According to the Chief, accumulating citations and counting DUIs is not a practice in the SPD. Koltiska told listeners that the ultimate goal of any police department is to provide security for an event and not be forced to issue any citations. The duty of every officer is to provide safety for those taking part in the celebrations. 

To assist in this goal, the Sheridan Police Department is offering free rides home on Friday and Saturday nights through the use of two major stops individuals can utilize if they have had a drink. SPD Captain Tom Ringley told listeners where those stops will be located. 

Koltiska asks that should the public use the free rides home, please be courteous to the volunteer drivers.
