Off-road enthusiasts were touring the Bighorn Mountains and finding their own travel challenges along the way.

The Jeep Company does a number of Jeep Jamborees across the country each year, and this past weekend more than 100 Jeeps traveled the various back-roads around the Burgess Junction area.

A special use permit from the Bighorn National Forest was granted for the events and this year marks the 15th time the Jeep Jamboree has been held in the Bighorn Mountains.

Brian Donowho from Woodway, Texas, which is near Waco, says he’s participated in events like this one before and explains how the event works.

Brian Donowho

“A bunch of like minded jeepers get together and go exploring out on the trails. The nice thing about the Jamboree is as opposed to doing it yourself, is that you got a bunch of local guides, so one of the local Jeep clubs is participating along with the Jeep Jamboree USA organization to help organize and keep everybody heading in the right direction. It’s really fun, if you’ve never been in a 4-wheel drive vehicle at low range, crawling over rocks, then it’s something you need to experience.”

The Jeep Jamboree was last held in the Bighorn Mountains back in 2021.

Little wonder why the Bighorns were ruined long ago.

Yeah when the forestry dept started selling the use of our public lands. Sorry there Fred it’s not the jeeps doing the damage, if your going to point blame let’s not exclude the cows that are permitted to overgraze or the side by sides doing Mach 2 through the trails. I’m sure when you use the mountain you only use your bare feet as to not disturb the nature around yourself correct. Don’t blame the jeeps or even the organized events surrounding them there are far worse users of our mountain. Our group is always stopping trail to pick up trash and clear obstacles that are not part of the trail. We are better stewards of the trail than the forestry dept from my perspective

Long before there were any silly jeep things going on in the Big Horns locals,on both sides of the mountains, hunted and fished for generations without all the racket of toys and hot rods spoiling the experience. With the advent of large coal mines in the Gillette area many years ago the same Big Horns were infested with throngs of people who set about to ruin that experience. Perhaps if y’all had been around in those decades y’all would have seen over time how the Big horns have become nothing but a playground for snobs and punks.Once ruined nothing will ever be the same.
