Randi Kay Scherer passed peacefully in her sleep in the early morning of Tuesday, December 13th, 2022 in her bed at the Scherer’s cabin home in the Big Horn Mountains outside of Buffalo, Wyoming at the age of 70.

The memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 14th at 3:00 pm MST at Journey Church in Gillette, Wyoming. Address: 3601 Southern Drive, Gillette, WY 82718.

Randi Kay Riggenbach was born on May 14th, 1952 in Monte Vista, Colorado to parents Milton and Vera Riggenbach and older brother Rodney Riggenbach. Randi grew up on a potato farm and sheep ranch outside of Monte Vista and graduated high school in 1970. Randi then moved to Denver, Colorado to start her educational journey into ultrasonography, radiology, and nuclear medicine. She completed her education and began her 21-year career as an ultrasonographer and nuclear medicine technologist at Saint Anthony North and Central hospitals in Denver. It was during this time that she met Rick Scherer, on February 20th, 1988. They were married one year and five days later on February 25th, 1989 in a beautiful church in the mountains outside of Denver.

Rick and Randi Scherer moved to Seattle, Washington in 1991 where they welcomed their son, Jesse Levi, on October 30th, 1992. They then moved back to Denver in late 1993 and welcomed their daughter, Jaime Rose, on February 9th, 1994. Randi always said her husband and children were the three best decisions she ever made. Rick was the love of her life and her children were her two greatest joys and blessings.

Rick, Randi, Jesse, and Jaime moved to Gillette, Wyoming in 1994 and lived there until 1997, at which time they moved to Buffalo, Wyoming. Rick’s career required that they move back to Gillette in 2001, where they would stay and build lifelong friendships and a loving, supportive community and church home for 16 years.

During this time, on February 20th, 2014, Randi was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. The prognosis was not optimistic, but Randi had faith and fought hard with multiple major surgeries and countless hours of chemotherapy. She was declared cancer free at the end of the year 2014 and continued to shatter all expectations and statistics during her 9-year battle against cancer.

Once Jesse and Jaime left home to pursue their careers, Rick and Randi sold their home in Gillette in 2017 and moved to their cabin home that the family and several very talented friends had built from the ground up in the mountains outside of Buffalo, Wyoming. From their cabin home, Rick and Randi have run Mountain View Ministry, a pastoral retreat, for the past 7 years.

In 2020, Randi’s ovarian cancer returned. She went through another round of surgeries and chemotherapy and endless doctor’s appointments for two years. On October 1st, 2022, Randi was diagnosed with treatment-induced Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), an extremely aggressive form of bone marrow cancer brought on by the life-saving treatments she underwent to combat her ovarian cancer. Randi persevered with unwavering faith and courage and met this new challenge as she had all the others: with God and without fear. She often reminded her loved ones that cancer is the little “c”, and her Christ Jesus is the big “C”.

Randi enjoyed two months with her family and was able to go on her 34th annual Scherer family canoe trip in October to the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota and celebrate Thanksgiving with her loved ones. Although her physical strength continued to decrease, her faith and determination were stronger than ever.

On Tuesday, November 29th, Randi was admitted to the regional medical center in Casper, Wyoming with sepsis. She fought bravely for 8 days before the doctors informed the family that her organs were shutting down and there was nothing more they could do other than make her comfortable. Randi asked to go home. So on Wednesday, December 7th, the family took Randi home to her own bed in their cabin home where she enjoyed another 6 days surrounded by nothing but love and tenderness. She went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, December 13th in the arms of her husband and children. They never left her side, not for one moment.

Randi was one of the kindest, most generous people many were blessed to ever know. She served her family, friends, loved ones, and community well; always ready with a smile and a plate of homemade treats. She was a committed and life-long follower of Jesus, a loving and dedicated wife of 33 years, a gentle and patient mother of 30 years, and a steadfast and loyal friend to anyone who was blessed to know her.

Randi was preceded in death by both of her parents, Milton and Vera, and is survived by her husband Rick, her son Jesse (30), her daughter Jaime (28), and her brother Rod. She is already dearly missed by thousands of others who fell in love with this incredible woman. To know her was to love her and our overwhelming grief is the price of that powerful love.

Randi remained faithful and unafraid until the very end. Having wanted to be baptized for several years but never having an opportunity where she was well enough, Randi requested her home pastor and long-time friend, Erin Youngs of Journey Church in Gillette, WY, travel to the family’s cabin home on Thursday, December 8th to fulfill her long-time wish to be baptized as a public display of the faith she had been living her entire life.
