It may have been just a 4-team tournament, but the Sheridan Lady Mavericks lacrosse team can call themselves champions, in their 2nd year of existence.

This past weekend was the Montana High School Lacrosse League State Championship tournament at Helena, and Sheridan played in the Division 2 level, against the JV teams from Bozeman, Billings and Jackson.

The Lady Mavericks beat Billings in the semi-finals on Saturday 9-3, and then beat Bozeman in the championship game on Sunday by the same score.

Head Coach Brianna Scholl says as the championship game went on, the Sheridan girls started to wear down the opposition, and although Bozeman had the better record and had won 2 of 3 matchups earlier this season, the Lady Mavericks had the one thing that trumped whatever disadvantages they may have had.

“The girls just really put pedal to the metal and we just had more tank, and they just had more want. Our girls wanted it more than the Bozeman girls did at that current moment, and we didn’t quit, we didn’t let anything get in our way. When we got frustrated, we just picked each other back up in a positive way and kept each other going.”

Sheridan finishes the season with a record of 11-3.

As for the boys, they went into the state tournament as the #3 seed and were upset in the first round by Cody 6-4.

Then they beat Missoula in an elimination game 15-4, and then dropped the 5th game vs. Great Falls 9-7, to finish the season with a record of 9-5.
