Sheridan County’s Commissioners have drafted a letter to the Wyoming Department of Homeland Security to express support of the application for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant for mapping coal seam fires within the county.

According to the letter, the project has critical importance to ensure the safety of the county’s residents.

They pose threats to the economy and environment within the three partnering counties of Sheridan, Johnson, and Campbell.

In addition, the county commission has committed up to $80,000 as a cash match for the execution of grant activities associated with the project.

Their support will ensure the successful implementation of the mapping efforts and facilitate collaboration among the three stakeholders.

Accurate mapping is essential, they said, for effective mitigation strategies and public safety initiatives.
