The Bighorn National Forest has reported that due to staffing shortages that have impacted services provided, the Medicine Wheel Ranger District office in Greybull, Wyoming, is open by appointment. BNF recommends calling ahead prior to visiting any of the Bighorn National Forest offices to ensure the services needed can be provided with the staff available.
“Because of key staffing vacancies and the inability to fill those positions, we are unable to process permit requests and conduct other business transactions at the office”, Medicine Wheel District Ranger Mark Foster said. “Our staff are still able to answer questions, but unfortunately, we cannot perform transactions.”
Should the public wish to schedule an appointment with any of the Medicine Wheel Ranger District staff, call (307) 548-5338. The Bighorn National Forest reports the agency will address this shortfall to the communities on the western side of the Forest by allowing mail-in permits:
Customers seeking to purchase a post-and-pole or firewood permit can still obtain the permit forms at the Greybull Office. These forms are available outside the front door of the Office.
Customers must then send the permit form to either the Sheridan or Buffalo offices.
Staff at the offices in Sheridan or Buffalo will process and transmit the permit back to the requestor. The BNF asks that the public please allow a 7-10 day lead time to process these permits.
The Forest is also working to implement an online e-permit system that would allow the public to purchase these and other permits directly online.
“We understand the temporary inconvenience of this situation, and are doing everything we can here in Greybull to continue these core services—even improving them,” Foster said.
For additional information, contact District Ranger Mark Foster at 307-250-7626.
The BNF appreciates the patience and flexibility of those being served as they continue to work through these staffing issues. Offices in Sheridan and Buffalo remain open during regular business hours 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday except federal holidays.
