UW Awarded Major Grant for K-12 English as a Second Language Educator Training

University of Wyoming Director of Internal Communications Chad Baldwin  told listeners of Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse the university has received a $4.12 million federal grant to help Wyoming K-12 teachers better serve students learning English. 

UW made the announcement on Sept. 21, the award will fund the five-year WELCOME Project beginning Jan. 1. According to Baldwin Wyoming’s educators will have the opportunity to earn English as a second language teaching endorsements.

A major award for UW,  the John “Jack” Ellbogen Dean of the College of Education, Jenna Shim, noted in a UW story the National Professional Development Program is one of the Department of Education’s premier competitive grant programs, with only about 10% of applicants receiving funding. 

The grant will cover participants’ tuition through UW’s College of Education. It also will fund an annual summer institute and coaching in participating schools across the state. 

Baldwin said UW will announce an application process in the near future. 

Assistant Professor Amin Davoodi secured the award and Baldwin said the project is the university’s response to a longstanding statewide shortage of teachers with ESL endorsements and aims to strengthen classroom instruction for multilingual students.
