Sheridan County HS Track and Field: This year’s Wyoming High School State Track and Field meet is underway and after the first day, Sheridan County High School athletes have won 2 state championships, and have set a class record.

Gavin Stafford of Big Horn is the 2A Boys State champ in the long jump, with a jump of 23 feet 0 ¾ inches.

That is a new 2A Boys state record.

The old record was 22 feet 4 ½ inches set back in 1995.

Also finishing in 1st was Landrum Wiley of Sheridan in the 4A boys 3200 meter run, with a time of 9 minutes 38.55 seconds.

There are also 3 state runners-up from yesterday.

Alex Haswell of Sheridan placed 2nd in the 4A Boys Shot Put.

The Sheridan boys 1600 sprint medley relay team placed 2nd, and Jeniah Lovingood of Tongue River finished in 2nd in the 2A girls shot put.

Action today starts at 9am with the 800 meter run.

Later in the afternoon will be the finals of the 400 meter relay and 3200 meter relay races.

Preliminary races will take place today in the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes, as well as the 300 meter hurdles races.

Most of the field events will take place today, but there could be a change in the pole vault schedule, because there are concerns with how windy it may be in Casper.

Sheridan HS Boys Soccer: Dane Steel scored with about 12 1/2 minutes to go, and that made the difference, as the Sheridan boys beat Rock Springs 1-nil in the first round of the 4A Boys State Tournament.

The Broncs will play in the semi-finals today vs. Jackson beginning at 4pm in Rock Springs.

Sheridan Mavericks/Lady Mavericks Lacrosse: Tomorrow and Sunday is the Montana High School Lacrosse Association State Championship Tournament, which is being played in Helena.

The Sheridan Mavericks are 8-3 on the season and have the #3 seed in the Division 2 bracket.

Up first is rematch vs. Cody tomorrow at 11am.

The Warriors beat the Mavericks at Sheridan about one month ago.

Depending on how the bracket shakes down, it’s possible that Sheridan may have to go through all 3 teams that beat them this season.

Coach JR Wright says he’s fine with a mini-revenge tour and even though the season is only about 1 ½ months long, the Mavs have come together, particularly with their midfield game.

The semi-final games will be played tomorrow afternoon, and the championship, 3rd place and 5th place games will be played on Sunday.

As for the Lady Mavericks, they are seeded #2 in their 4-team bracket and will play Billings in the semi-finals tomorrow at 11am.

The championship and 3rd place games will be held on Sunday.

Sheridan Troopers Legion Baseball: The Sheridan Troopers will be on the diamond for a home double-header on Sunday against the Billings Expos.

First pitch is scheduled for 3pm and you can watch the LIVE video stream of the double-header at sheridanmedia.com, and you can hear the audio play-by-play on AM 1410 KWYO and 106.9 FM.

Colorado Rockies Baseball: The Colorado Rockies look to continue to build on their current 7-game win streak as the team gets ready to play a 3-game series at San Francisco.

First pitch today is scheduled for 8:15pm.

Saturday’s and Sunday’s game will be afternoon contests, starting at 2:05pm both days.

Denver Nuggets Basketball: To say that the Denver Nuggets forgot to show up last night, is probably an understatement.

Playing in Game 6 of their second round best of 7 series at Minnesota, the Nuggets had a chance to close out the series and advance to the Western Conference Finals, but instead the offense was MIA and the final score ended up being 115-70.

Denver only scored 14 points in the first quarter, and 9 in the 4th.

The 45-point margin of victory by Minnesota is the second largest margin of victory in NBA playoff history, by a team facing elimination.

The series is now tied at 3 wins each.

Game 7 is Sunday, at Denver.

Start time to be announced.

Colorado Avalanche Hockey: The Colorado Avalanche survived elimination 2 days ago, and tonight they have to do it again, but this time it will be in the comforts of their home ice.

The Avs host Dallas in Game 6 of their second round best of 7 playoff series, starting at 8pm.

Colorado trails the series 3-2, and if they win tonight, that would force Game 7 which would be played on Sunday at Dallas.

Elsewhere in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, last night the New York Rangers eliminated Carolina, winning 5-3, and winning the series 4-games-to-2.

The Rangers advance to the Eastern Conference Finals and are waiting for the winner between Boston and Florida.

Vancouver got the winning goal with 33 seconds to go, to beat Edmonton 3-2, and the Canucks now have a 3-2 lead in their series.
