Selma Pauline Melander was born on March 21, 1933, in Courtland, Minnesota to Otto and Alvina Bublitz. During her high school years, Selma worked as a bookkeeper (way before computers). Upon graduation from New Ulm High School in Minnesota, she met Allen Melander and they were married on November 3, 1951. Together they raised a family and worked on a small farm in Chisago County, MN. Selma also worked in a plastics manufacturing plant while her husband worked at a farm implement factory. Shortly after their youngest child, Dean was born, they sold the farm. In 1974 they, with the younger 2 children, moved to Wyoming – first to Moorcroft and then to Buffalo. Then until her retirement, Selma worked in the kitchen of the Johnson County Health Care Center in Buffalo.
Selma liked to garden and sew. During the farming days, home-grown vegetables were always served at meals. She made hand-sewn quilts for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She made the best cookies and other baked goods. She always made herself available for her family and friends. She is survived by three sons, Dean Melander and his wife Amy of Aurora, Colorado, David Melander and his wife Cheryl of Middleton, Idaho, and Gary Melander and his wife Cameron of Virginia Beach, Virginia; one daughter, Janet Goenner and her husband Keith of Isanti, Minnesota; one sister Esther Holle of Mankato, Minnesota; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one sister Bernice Pfeiffer.
