A former Sheridan Media Sports Director among many other titles will have his name immortalized in Wyoming Broadcasting History.
Tim Ray, who was the Sheridan Media sports director and radio play-by-play guy from 1980-to-1989, will be inducted into the Wyoming Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame at the WAB Convention this coming June in Cody.
He also did radio play-by-play for the Casper Rockies minor league baseball team, was the Athletics Director for the Natrona County School District, and then became the General Manager of the Casper Ghosts, who later moved to Grand Junction, Colorado.
He says for those thinking about getting into the broadcasting industry, start with some radio, before you get in front of a camera, because you can learn how to read and later learn how to speak without reading.
“I used to get a kick out of watching young kids right out of school or whatever, get in front of the teleprompter in television and then all of a sudden the teleprompter wouldn’t work, or would stop and they would give that deer in the headlight look to the camera. They were frozen. They didn’t know how to get out of it and it’s because a lot of them didn’t have a radio background, that would teach you how to ad-lib a little bit and think on your feet.”
Tim Ray graduated from Indiana State University in 1979.
He attended the 1979 NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship Game between ISU and Michigan State in Salt Lake City, Utah.
That game is significant because it marked the first head-to-head meeting between basketball legends Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

Congrats to Tim Ray, we were JC’s together. We had an all JC steer riding the first or second year of the county rodeo. When the gate opened Tims steer laid down.

Congratulations, Tim, on this richly deserved honor. It was always a pleasure working with you back in Sheridan days. Great memories of those times, with your matchless narration!
