Experience paid off for this year’s winners of the Sneakers and Spurs race, before the Sheridan WYO Parade.
Wyatt Ostler, who is a senior at Tongue River High School, crossed the finish line first in a time of around 16 minutes and 10 seconds.
He says the first part of the race was fun and laid back, and then eventually it became competitive.
“I just went out with Austin Akers and some of the Sheridan boys and we just talked the first mile, and then we actually started racing right after the first mile and I just felt good and when I felt pain, I was just like…I got to run through it, I got to run through it…so that’s what I did.”
Emerald Holdin of Highlands Ranch, Colorado won the women’s portion of the race with a time of a little more than 18 minutes.
She says she ran in her high school days in Cheyenne as well as at the University of Wyoming, along with many more events.
She adds that she’s run this race before and running in front of a big crowd on Sheridan’s Main Street was fun.
“I’ve done quite a few races from high school on up till obviously today, and anywhere from half marathons to marathons, the 5 K’s, 10 K’s, and all the cross country times in high school and college, so running is just a part of my life.”
Several hundred runners and walkers participated in the event, which was 5 kilometers long for runners and 1 ½ miles for walkers.
