A Funding Dilemma

Funding K-12 education in Wyoming remains a hot button issue. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter recently sat down with Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon to discuss the topic.
Wyoming lawmakers continue to work on legislation aimed at addressing the projected $300 million funding shortfall in K-12 education in the state over the next two years. Governor Mark Gordon addressed the likelihood of a long-term funding solution being developed during the legislative session that’s going on in Cheyenne.
Governor Gordon said developing a long term school finance model will require a lot of variables.
House Bill 173, the School Finance Funding bill is currently working its way through the Legislature. The bill includes cuts to education along with a one-half penny sales tax provision that could be levied if and when the state’s rainy day fund drops below $650 million. The legislative session is expected to run through the first week of April.
