Published

on

On April 6, Jesse Ludikhuize, Emergency Management Coordinator, announced that Sheridan County Emergency Management, in partnership with the University of Wyoming Extension Office and the National Weather Service, will host a free SKYWARN Storm Spotter Training for the community on Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The training will take place at Sheridan College, Watt Agriculture Building (1090 Dome Loop), Room 131.

This two-hour course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to identify and report severe weather. The training is open to the public and is especially valuable for residents, first responders, ranchers, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone interested in weather awareness and public safety.

Participants will learn:

  • Thunderstorm basics and storm structure
  • How to identify potential severe weather
  • Impacts from hail, wind, flooding, and tornadoes
  • How to properly report weather observations to the National Weather Service

Storm spotters play a critical role in providing real-time, ground-truth information that helps the National Weather Service issue accurate and timely warnings. This is particularly important in northern Wyoming, where rapidly changing weather conditions can impact travel, agriculture, and public safety.

There is no cost to attend the training, but participants are encouraged to register in advance.
