Safety is the First Issue: Sheriff Addresses Red Grade Road Restrictions

Published

on

The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office restricted Red Grade Road to tracked vehicles beginning Jan. 9, after winter conditions and increased vehicle traffic began creating problems west of the closure point.

The restriction applies to wheeled vehicles attempting to access Forest Service lands and groomed trail systems beyond the county road. Sheridan County Sheriff Levi Dominguez told listeners of Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse that the Sheridan County Board of Commissioners has taken steps to allow some wiggle room in the past during winters with little snowfall.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the decision to restrict access to the road was made after vehicles became stuck and caused damage to groomed trails further west, creating additional strain on county resources.

Deputies have responded to incidents involving motorists attempting to travel beyond safe winter conditions, prompting concerns about safety and preventable impacts to the area.

The restriction will remain in place for the winter season unless conditions improve. The Sheriff is encouraging residents and recreationists to check road status before traveling and to be prepared for winter conditions when accessing mountain areas.
