Sheridan AAUW celebrates local women in the arts

The history of the American Association of University Women is a large part of the history of progress in the United States. As the number of women graduating from college grew in the U.S., so did their membership.
Formed in 1914, the Sheridan Branch of the AAUW has been educating, promoting and fighting for equal rights among the women of Sheridan County.
Sheridan Branch of the American Association of University Women Chair Jolene Olson and Secretary Robin West made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to talk on the history of the organization and announce an upcoming event planned for March: Women’s History Month.

Locally, the AAUW supports the Rowena Griffith Emergency Endowment Grant Fund at Sheridan College. The fund helps women to achieve their goal of a higher education by helping with emergency expenses. All too often it is the unexpected events such as a high utility bill or a need for tires that would otherwise cause a woman to drop out of school and seek employment. West told a story of how Griffith was inspired to create this vital grant fund.

To observe Women’s History Month, the Sheridan branch of the AAUW is hosting “Women in the Arts: Bringing Art and Community Together.” This presentation is a panel discussion that will bring women from the Sheridan area whose work connects the creators of art with the Sheridan community.
Free and open to the public the event will be taking place at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 8, at Sheridan College, Whitney Center for the Arts, Room 235. Light refreshments will be provided and a question and answer segment will spark conversation.
