The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office reports an increase in calls regarding an online scam involving sales on social media platforms.

Many social media platforms include an option to take part in local sales and trades from fellow members. The concept is nothing new, but some of the listed items are scams designed to lure in potential buyers.

Sheridan County Sheriff Levi Dominguez suggests meeting the seller in a public location and seeing the item before exchanging any kind of payment or information.

According to Dominguez, victims can be lured in with promises of receiving these items after money has already changed hands, but the victim never hears from the seller again.

The scam can be conducted year round and can be popular during holidays. Scammers are often located in other countries but perform enough research online to appear local with pictures and fake but familiar names.
