The Sheridan Civic Theater Guild has reported they are looking for female performers to audition for the upcoming production of the classic play “The Vagina Monologues.”

Auditions will be held at 6 p.m. Monday Jan. 20 and Tuesday Jan. 21, at the Carriage House Theatre, located at 419 Delphi Ave. It is not required to attend both nights to be considered for a role.

According to the CTG, playwright Eve Ensler wrote the play based on a series of interviews she conducted in the late 1990s with over 200 women from all walks of life. The goal was to create an accurate depiction of what it meant to be a woman in the world at that time. While the world has changed significantly since then, both director Kathleen Lundberg and CTG President Aaron Odom feel that many of the issues presented in the play are still relevant and relatable today. The play has been performed thousands of times over the past few decades in countries all over the world.

Lundberg has appeared on Sheridan stages as a performer in many productions over the past several years. This will be her first time directing. Lundberg was inspired to sit in the director’s chair as a result of completing the Creative Aging course on directing a stage play offered at the WYO Performing Arts and Education Center this past spring. This course was conducted by Odom.

“Kathy had this play in mind as a passion project for a number of years, but just didn’t know how to get it off the ground,” Odom said. “Fortunately, the CTG was looking for something of an academic thinkpiece for this section of the 2024-2025 season. So, we could help her with the ‘behind-the-scenes’ stuff. Plus, this is a great show for a first-time director as it specifically focuses on the performances and doesn’t usually require a lot of technical expertise.”

Lundberg is looking for “10 brave women ages 18-90 who have experienced WOMANHOOD.” Auditioners will be asked to do cold readings from the script, based on the character descriptions that will be provided. Lundberg would like to remind those interested in auditioning that the language used and situations discussed in the play are often quite explicit but are necessary to tell the story.

“If you can’t say the V-word, then maybe this is precisely the show for you, as Kathy and I both feel that the term itself should not inspire embarrassment or indecency.” Odom said echoing Lundberg’s views

Performances will run March 13-16, and 20-23. If cast, performers can expect rehearsals to run Monday through Thursday, beginning on Jan. 27. As production week gets closer, performers may be asked to rehearse more frequently.
