Aaron PalmerAn historical presentation on Fort Antonio, which was located near Kaycee, will be given this coming Sunday, March 10 by the Hoofprints of the Past Museum in Kaycee.
Cody Newton, who holds a Ph.D. In Anthropology, is an experienced archaeologist with over 20 years of experience working in the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain region.
He will give the history of the Portuguese Fort site using artifacts from the site east of Kaycee.
According to a release from the museum, Fort Antonio was built in 1834 as a fur trading post by trapper Antonio Montero, that experienced attacks by Blackfeet Indians, competition from Jim Bridger’s fur company, theft, and legal challenges from government bureaucrats.
The decline in the population of beaver and the demand for the fur was the final blow to the fort and it was abandoned in 1840.
The presentation will be March 10 at Harold Jarrard Park in Kaycee beginning at 1 p.m.
Coffee and cookies will be served at the event that is free and open to the public.
