State Representative Barry Crago (R-District 40) is in Cheyenne for the 2024 Legislative Budget Session and will be talking with Sheridan Media during the weeks he is in session.

State Representative Steve Harshman (R-District 37), presented a property tax bill, (HB203), which would have eliminated much of the state’s property taxes in exchange for increasing the sales tax.

The bill passed in the House on first and second reading, but was defeated by a vote in the House on Tuesday.

Crago, in an interview before Tuesday’s vote, said the legislation is a novel idea that should be looked into.

Crago added that some of the debate on the bill centered on fluctuating sales taxes and what that could mean to local governments and necessary services throughout the state.

According to Cowboy State Daily, other property tax reform bills passed out of the House and now headed to the Senate are HB52, HB134, and HB103.

We will have more from our conversation with Representative Crago in upcoming stories.

The legislature needs to craft a proposal that would impose a statewide one or two percent sales tax dedicated to supplement K-12 schools and at the same time lower tax levy’s allowed for Wyoming’s schools…the 1-2 cent sales tax plus lowering school tax levy’s would off set lost revenue
