A 2-vehicle collision has claimed the life of the Big Horn County Montana Sheriff.

According to the Montana Highway Patrol, sometime after 5pm on Sunday, November 19th, 55-year old Darrell King was driving in a private vehicle on US Highway 212 near the Little Bighorn Battlefield Monument, when he collided head-on with a semi-trailer.

King was pronounced dead at the scene and troopers say they believe speed and alcohol were not contributing factors in the incident which is still under investigation.

He is a former Marine who took over as Sheriff this past January after being elected to the position last year.

Big Horn County Commissioners have appointed Undersheriff Jeromie Middlestead as interim sheriff.
