Ron RichterHeavy smoke from Canadian wildfires has prompted the National Weather Service in Billings to issue an air quality alert for Sheridan County until 1 pm on Wednesday. The Wyoming Department of Health recommends the elderly, young children, and those with respiratory problems avoid excessive physical exertion and minimize outdoor activities during this time. Individuals with heart and lung disease should avoid prolonged periods outside during the alert.
According to the Department of Health, wildfire smoke is made up of a variety of pollutants, including particulate matter and ozone, which can cause respiratory health effects. The Air Quality Division of the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality offers near real-time air quality data for Wyoming’s monitoring stations and information on the health effects to help the public interpret the current conditions. Current air quality conditions throughout Wyoming can be accessed here.
