Jim Gatchell Museum Receives Award

The Johnson County Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum has been chosen one of eight winners for the 2023 National Medal for Museum and Library Service.
Gatchell Museum Director Sylvia Bruner explains what the award means to the museum, the staff, and the community.
According to their website, the National Medal is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries that demonstrate excellence in service to their communities.
Since 1996, the award has honored 182 institutions that demonstrated extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service.
Bruner said the Gatchell was nominated by US Senator Cynthia Lummis, and were informed last fall that the museum was named a finalist for the award.
She describes some of the programs the museum offers that led to getting the award.
Bruner shared her personal feelings on the museum winning the award.
There will be a ceremony in Washington, D.C. that Bruner and staff will be attending in July to receive the award.
