We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution National Finals is a yearly competition involving high school students from throughout the United States.
The students from the We the People team at Sheridan High School have won the Wyoming State We the People Competition. This has earned them the opportunity to compete at the national level.
AP Government and Politics instructor at SHS, Michael Thomas and a few of his We the People students recently attended the Post Legislative Session Lunch with the Sheridan Chamber of Commerce and members of the Wyoming Legislature.
The national finals simulates a congressional hearing and is held at the National Conference Center in Leesburg, Virginia, and in congressional hearing rooms on Capitol Hill. According to Thomas, the program is currently at approximately 50% of their fundraising goal. Students and their families are asked to contribute 25% of the cost of the trip which is $600 this year. The total cost per person is $2,295.

SHS We the People students have been preparing for the national competition since the questions were released, Thomas said.
Students have been writing two new essays and have been working to learn new material. Thomas and his team use mock question and answer sessions as well as mock Congressional hearings to simulate the actual competition.
This year the oral arguments are limited to four minutes and the Q & A session is limited to eight minutes. Students are scored on a rubric by three judges on a panel, Thomas said.
